With YRF Announcing Its Slate, Here Are 11 Big Bollywood Movies Confirmed For Theatrical Release

Given that the South Indian film industry has made bold moves regarding theatrical releases, has Bollywood finally caught up with its theatrical slate?
With YRF Announcing Its Slate, Here Are 11 Big Bollywood Movies Confirmed For Theatrical Release

For the longest time, it seemed that Bollywood was a weary on-looker, as the Bengalis celebrated Durga Puja last year by releasing 10 new films in the theater and as Tamilians celebrated Pongal this year with Lokesh Kanagaraj's hotly anticipated Master starring Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi, with some reports suggesting a box-office windfall of over 200 crores. The film then had its seamless streaming premiere on Amazon Prime by the end of January. The Telugu film industry, too, has decided to play the gamble. Its biggest films are up for release this year. Radha Krishna Kumar's Prabhas-starrer Radhe Shyam is releasing on 30 July, 2021, Allu Arjun-starrer Pushpa is scheduled for 13 August, 2021, and Rajamouli's epic RRR  is scheduled for 13 October, 2021.

Bollywood is still grappling. The tentpole films, Sooryavanshi and 83, are showing no signs of theatrical release. Laxmmi and Coolie No.1 both were sent direct to streaming, but given the lack of clarity on numbers it is hard to say what the streaming numbers mean.

On the other hand films were also released in theaters without getting a streaming counterpart, like Kiara Advani starrer Indoo Ki Kawani and Richa Chadha's two films, Shakeela and Madam Chief Minister.

According to a recent KPMG report, the film segment will contract by 67% over 2020-21, registering revenues of Rs. 6,100 crore versus Rs. 18,300 crore the previous year. More than 1,000 theatres, especially single screens across India, have shuttered.

In this drought of exciting theatricals, Yash Raj, one of the few production houses that has refused to send any of its films direct to streaming, announced its slate of theatrical releases, as Dharma announced the pan-Indian Liger's release date and Salman Khan hoped for an Eid Release. Here's a list of these films we hope to catch in the theaters—strangers in a dark room, experiencing a world beyond their own.
