Here’s a recap of the significant stories in entertainment across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films, and sometimes the odd television series as well.

Thugs gets an OTT release date (Tamil)

Ace choreographer Brinda Gopal’s sophomore effort Thugs released in theatres on February 24. The makers have now announced that the action crime film will be streaming on Jio Cinema from May 20th.

The film which is set in a prison, stars Bobby Simha, Munishkanth, RK Suresh and Hridhay Haroon. It is backed by Riya Shibu and Mumtas M under HR Pictures and Jio Studios. Sam CS has composed the music while Priyesh Gurusamy and Praveen Antony have handled the cinematography and editing respectively.

Maamannan’s first single features Vadivelu’s vocals (Tamil)

Mari Selvaraj’s third feature film starring Udayanidhi Stalin and Vadivelu is planning for a June release. The makers of the film recently released the first single, which features Vadivelu on the vocals. Titled ‘Raasa Kannu’, the song is composed by AR Rahman, in his first collaboration with Mari Selvaraj, with lyrics by Yuga Bharati.

The film also stars Fahaad Faasil and Keerthy Suresh in a pivotal role. It is the final film of Udhayanidhi Stalin before he shifts to his political career. He is producing the film under his Red Giants banner.

Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam gets a release date (Tamil)

The makers of the Arya starrer Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam recently announced the release date of the film. The film directed by Muthiah of Viruman fame will be released on June 2nd.

The film is the first collaboration between Arya and Muthiah, and will be bankrolled by Drumsticks Productions along with Zee Studios. Velraj is the cinematographer while GV Prakash Kumar is providing the music for the film.

Ashok Selvan’s Por Thozhil gets its first look (Tamil)

The first look of the Ashok Selvan and Sarathkumar starrer Por Thozil was released by the makers. The poster features the lead actors in what looks like an investigation room. The duo will be playing cops in the film.

Directed by Vignesh Raja in his debut, the film is an investigative thriller centred around a senior cop who mentors a young trainee whilst investigating a case. The filmmaker has chosen to keep the rest of the cast under wraps in order to maintain the suspense. Jakes Bejoy composes the music while Kalaiselvan Sivaji handles the cinematography. The film is all set to release on June 9th.

First Look Of Ashok Selvan-Sarath Kumar's Por Thozhil Out

Manoj Bharathiraja’s Margazhi Thingal gets its leads (Tamil)

A few weeks ago, it was announced that actor Manoj Bharathiraja will be making his directorial debut with Margazhi Thingal. After a search for fresh lead actors, the makers have announced that Rakshana and Shyam Selvan will be headlining the project. Margazhi Thingal will be their feature film debut. The film will be backed by Suseenthiran under his banner Vennila Productions and will feature music by GV Prakash Kumar.

Pawan Kalyan-Sai Dharam Tej’s film gets a title (Telugu)

Earlier it was announced that Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej will be featuring for the first time in a film directed by actor-director Samuthirakani. The makers of the film recently announced the title of the film along with a motion poster. Titled Bro, the film is a remake of Samuthirakani’s own Vinodhaya Sitham.

Bro will have its screenplay and dialogues written by Trivikram Srinivas and will be produced by Vishwa Prasad TG and Vivek Kuchibhotla under their banner People Media Factory, in association with Zee Studios. Thaman S is set to score the music while Naveen Nooli and Sujith Vasudev are the editor and cinematographer respectively.

NTR 30 gets its first look and title (Telugu)

The much awaited first look poster of Jr.NTR in his next with Koratala Siva was recently unveiled. The action entertainer also got its title after being referred to as NTR30 in the past. Titled Devara, the first-look poster sees Jr.NTR in a massy avatar, holding a bloodied spear over a capsized boat on the sea shore as waves crash surrounding him.

Said to be a period-action entertainer, the film also stars Janhvi Kapoor in her Telugu debut as well as Saif Ali Khan. Hari Krishna K and Mikkilineni Sudhakar are producing the film under the NTR Arts and Yuva Sudha Arts banners. Anirudh Ravichandar scores the music while Rathnavel and Sreekar Prasad handle cinematography and editing respectively. The film aims to release on 5th April, 2024.

Ram Pothineni and Puri Jagannadh return with iSmart Shankar sequel (Telugu)

Ram Pothineni and Puri Jagannadh, who were last seen collaborating on the successful entertainer iSmart Shankar, are all set to return. The project is titled Double ISmart and is said to be a sequel. Like the predecessor, the film will be produced by Puri Jagannadh and actor Charmie Kaur under the Puri Connects Banner.

The original featured an ensemble cast including Satyadev, Nabha Natesh, Nidhhi Agerwal, Sayaji Shinde, and Ashish Vidyarthi. The makers of the sequel have not revealed any plot or cast and crew details. However, they are aiming to release the film on March 8th, 2024.

Dulquer Salman joins hands with Venky Atluri (Telugu)

Venky Atluri, who’s previous directorial was the successful Dhanush starrer Vaathi/Sir, is all set to collaborate with actor Dulquer Salman. Backed by Sithara Entertainments and Fortune 4 Cinemas, the film is currently titled Production 24. Aiming for a Summer 2024 release, the makers announced that the film will be going on floors in October of this year. The rest of the cast and crew details will be reveleaed shortly.

Neelavelicham gets an OTT release date (Malayalam)

Director Ashiq Abu’s latest film Neelavelicham recently released in theatres to a mixed response on April 20th. The makers of the thriller have now announced that the film will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video from May 23rd.

Starring Tovino Thomas, Roshan Mathew, Rima Kalingal and Shine Tom Chacko, the film is an adaptation of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer’s short story of the same name. The story was earlier adapted as Bhargavi Nilayam.

Director Mridul Nair announces his next film (Malayalam)

Mridul Nair, known for the film B Tech recently announced his next film. Titled Masala Dosha Mysore Akka, the director announced the film with a poster featuring many futuristic and psychedelic elements surrounding a woman wearing a saree with a VR type device covering her eyes. The poster indicates that the film will be aiming for a January 2024 release. Presented by The Filmy Joint and written by Nair and Sajimon Prabhakar (director of Malayankunju), this is the second collaboration between the writer duo. Nair is currently awaiting the release of his second directorial Kasargold, which is written by the same team and stars Asif Ali, Sunny Wayne and Vinayakan.

Tovino Thomas’ Ajayante Randam Moshanam gets a teaser (Malayalam)

The makers of the Tovino Thomas starrer Ajayante Randam Moshanam (ARM) unveiled the teaser of the film. Directed by Jithin Laal, the teaser promises to be a period-action-thriller. The teaser was released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada by Hrithik Roshan, Karthi, Nani, Prithviraj and Rakshit Shetty respectively.

The film is produced by DR Zachariah Thomas and Listin Stephen under Magic Frames and UGM Productions. It features an ensemble cast including Krithi Shetty, Aishwariya Rajesh, Surabhi Lakshmi, Basil Joseph, Rohini, Harish Uthaman, Jagadish, Pramod Shetty, Aju Varghese and Sudheesh. The film features music by Dhibu Ninan Thomas.

Kumar Govind returns to films with Kaatera (Kannada)

The makers of Darshan’s Kaatera recently announced the inclusion of yesteryear actor Kumar Govind in the cast. On the occasion of his birthday, the director Tharun Sudhir welcomed the actor, announcing that his character will be called Mahadevanna. The actor known for films such as Shhh! has been away from the screens for quite some time.

Set in a village backdrop in the 1970s, Kaatera will be the director’s second collaboration with Darshan after Roberrt. Produced by Rockline Venkatesh under his banner Rockline Entertainment, the film also features Radhana Ram, the daughter of Malashree as the lead actress. V Harikrishna scores the music while Sudhakar S Raj handles the camera.

Kichcha Sudeepa to feature as a narrator in Sonu Sood’s Sreemanta (Kannada)

The drama Sreemanta starring Sonu Sood has been in the pipeline for quite some time. After much delays due to the pandemic, the film is all set to release on May 19th. Moreover, the film is said to be narrated by Kichcha Sudeepa. The actors have previously collaborated in films like Vishnuvardhana.

Directed by Hassan Ramesh, the film features an ensemble cast including Vaishnavi Chandran, Vaishnavi Pathwardhan, Ramesh Bhat, Sadhu Kokila, Raju Thalikote, Ravishankar Gowda and Basavaraju Hassan. Produced by T K Ramesha, G Narayanappa,  and V Sanjay Babu under Goldenrain Movies, veteran music composer Hamsalekha provides the music while Ravikumar Sana handles the cinematography.

KGF’s Archana Jois joins Ajay Rao-starrer (Kannada)

Few weeks ago, it was announced that Ajay Rao would be starring and producing the film Yuddhakanda. While the principal cast includes Ajay Rao and Suprita Sathyanarayan, the makers announced the inclusion of Archana Jois, known for her roles in the KGF series as well as the coming-of-age drama Hondisi Bereyiri. She will be playing a pivotal role according to the actor. Details about her character are being kept under wraps.

Directed by Pavan Bhat of Cutting Shop fame, the film is said to be a legal thriller where Ajay plays the role of a lawyer. The film is set to resume shooting in June. KB Praveen provides the music while Karthik Sharma handles the cinematography.
