Ponniyin Selvan 1 starring Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and R. Parthiban is the slowest of slow burns. The film is the first in a two-part series, based on a five-volume novel written by Kalki. Director Mani Ratnam along with writers Kumaravel and Jeyamohan reworked the material into two films, which have to please the legions of lovers of the book. But the films also have to seduce newbies like me, who hadn’t heard of Ponniyin Selvan until the film was announced.
