Sudhir Mishra has wanted to make his version of Devdas for a long time. He was working on a film called Aur Devdas; he shelved it after the release of Dev.D (20010), because he thought that the film was the ultimate contemporary take on the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay classic.
Now the filmmaker has revived Aur Devdas as Daas Dev. The film is described as a 'reverse Devdas', and begins with Dev breaking free of his addictions to start a new chapter in his life. Set against the backdrop of politics in Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Bhat (Ugly) plays Dev, an emerging leader who hails from a politically illustrious family. Richa Chadha is Paro, the woman he loves, and the price he pays to climb his way to the top of the political order. Enter Aditi Rao Hydari as Chandni(a riff on Chandramukhi). Some of the other players in the mix are Saurabh Shukla, Vipin Sharma, Vineet Kumar Singh and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
Produced by Sanjeev Kumar, Saptarishi Cinevision, Daas Dev will release on 23 March.
