"You tell me your story, dad," asks Radhakrishnan's daughter. And so he begins the story about his life as an auto driver with a happy family in rural Tamilnadu. He speaks of his hopes, goals and dreams — we see him wearing all-white, like a politician who is rallying towards an election. Soon, the story takes a darker turn as we watch him hide from a police van, dance at a religious festival, offer prayers and then some.

Maamanithan is the fourth collaboration of Vijay Sethupathi and director Seenu Ramasamy after the latter's National award-winning Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, which was the actor's first film in a lead role, Idam Porul Yaeval and Dharma Durai. This film also stars Gayathrie, Anikha Surendran and Guru Somasundaram.

Music for the film is composed by Ilaiyaraaja and Yuvan Shankar Raja, collaborating for the first time. Two songs from the film were released over the last few months. The first single, 'Thattiputta', is composed and sung by Ilaiyaraaja. In the second, 'Ye Rasa', Yuvan Shankar Raja lends his voice, while it is set to tune by him and Ilaiyaraaja together. Both the songs are penned by Pa. Vijay.

The cinematography was handled by M Sukumar and it was edited by Sreekar Prasad. Yuvan Shankar Raja has produced the film along with Shan Sutharasan under the banner of YSR Productions.

Seenu Ramaswamy's last film was the romantic-drama Kanne Kalaimaane, starring Udhayanidhi Stalin and Tamannah. Vijay Sethupathi was last seen in Mughizh, along with his daughter Shreeja.
