Prithviraj, Based On Prithviraj Raso, Is YRF And Akshay Kumar Dabbling In The Historical Drama Genre

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has made the historical not just coveted but a fashionable genre. YRF and Akshay Kumar enter the fray with Prithviraj. (Subrata Chakraborty & Amit Ray, Bhansali's set designers for Padmaavat, are credited here as well) Based on Prithviraj Raso, a Braj Bhasha epic poem about the life of Prithviraj Chauhan, the film stars Akshay Kumar as Prithviraj Chauhan, with debutante Manushi Chhillar playing his wife Sanyogita. The film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood, Ashutosh Rana, Sakshi Tanwar, Manav Vij and Lalit Tiwari.

Principal photography began in late 2019 in Rajasthan, but the filming was stopped in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Shooting finally restarted at YRF Studios in October 2020. 

Chandraprakash Dwivedi, best known for directing the 1991 television epic Chanakya and Pinjar, is the writer and director. Produced by Aditya Chopra, the film releases theatrically on 21 January, 2022, as a Republic Day release.
