Jersey Trailer Talk: Shahid Kapoor As Former Star Cricketer Eyeing A Comeback

The trailer of Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur's Jersey begins with a dilemma. A disheveled, worn out man (Kapoor) hopes to buy a cricket jersey for his only child's birthday. His problem? He has no money. When he pleads for 500 rupees to his wife Vidya (Thakur), she refuses, telling him that its out of their budget. You can see that their marriage is in trouble, with him even considering stealing the money, which she clearly doesn't have, from her wallet.

He has a history with cricket, the game his son now aspires to play. He was once the blue-eyed boy of his team. His coach, now offering him the job of an assistant coach at a cricket club, even goes on to say that he was perhaps the best batter he had ever seen. It's also revealed that he had chosen to leave his heroic, happy life after unforeseen circumstances and clashes start to affect his life.

He, however, takes it upon himself to make his son's wishes come true, as he crosses the boundaries of a cricket stadium once again, hinting at a tentative return to a game he once loved. The trailer ends in bittersweet fashion. As he polishes his bat, his wife's voiceover suggests that she might choose to leave him if he goes back to the game.

The sports drama, also starring Pankaj Kapur, Shishir Sharma and Sharad Kelkar, was earlier slated for an August 2020 release before its post-production faced a delay due to the pandemic.

The film is an official remake of the 2019 Telugu-language blockbuster of the same name, starring Nani and Shraddha Srinath. It went on to win two National Awards, including Best Feature Film (Telugu) and Best Editing (by Naveen Nooli).

Written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri (the maker of the original Jersey), and produced by Allu Aravind, Aman Gill, Dil Raju, and Suryadevara Naga Vamsi, the film releases theatrically on December 31st. It will be distributed by Balaji Telefilms and Pen Marudhar Entertainment.
