Trailer Talk: Pirates of the Caribbean (Dead Men Tell No Tales)

Johnny Depp, according to movie pundits, is at a crossroads. He has been named most overpaid star in Hollywood for two years running now and nearly all of his leading man projects have been met with critical derision and box-office failure. In addition to which, he is knee-deep in financial troubles.

However, before the professional obituaries are written, Depp may have one last trick up his sleeve: Captain Jack Sparrow. In the Pirates of the Caribbean series, it's common for Sparrow to disappear or be assumed forever lost and/or dead. But huzzah, he always makes a triumphant return, crooked teeth and eyeliner intact.

The fifth film in the installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, nods to Sparrow's endless spirit. This time, he will be contending with a malevolent force, Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem, playing a dead creep with gusto), who wants to kill every pirate at sea.

Directed by Espen Sandberg & Joachim Rønning, the movie also marks the return of Geoffrey Rush's Hector Barbossa and features actress Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth, an astronomer.

Set to a sombre Johnny Cash tune, the trailer exudes a sense of foreboding. "Ain't no grave can hold my body down," Cash sings. True for Jack Sparrow and come release day, let's hope…true for Depp's career.
