Hotel Mumbai Trailer Talk: Dev Patel Plays Taj Hotel Staffer In Retelling Of 2008 Mumbai Terror Attacks

The trailer for Hotel Mumbai opens with iconic shots of the city – kaali peelis on the busy streets, the imposing Gateway of India, sabzi mandis. We see Dev Patel kiss his pregnant wife goodbye as he leaves for his job at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Colaba. "Remember always, here at the Taj, guest is God," says his boss, played by Anupam Kher.

The idyll doesn't last long. The soothing background score gives way to the frantic ticking of a clock as terrorists make their way to the city on a rubber dinghy. There are shots of them entering the Taj and the building on fire. We see Armie Hammer and Nazanin Boniadi playing married guests trapped at the hotel.

Directed by Australian filmmaker Anthony Maras and also starring Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Jason Isaacs, the film is based on the 2009 documentary Surviving Mumbai, directed by Victoria Midwinter Pitt. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year to solid reviews, with Variety highlighting the "hundreds of hours of firsthand research" put in by Maras and co-writer John Collee and calling the movie "a formidable achievement."

Hotel Mumbai will be released on Netflix in 2019.
