The class differences between the two romantic leads of Half Girlfriend, based on Chetan Bhagat's bestseller from 2014, are established right away.
Madhav Jha (Arjun Kapoor) is a village-born youngster from Bihar. Kapoor is introduced in the trailer in a scene where he is being interviewed for entry into an elite college in Delhi. He starts off in English, albeit with an exaggerated dehati accent, but then sheepishly abandons it and switches to Hindi.
So when he develops a crush on the Riya Somani (Shraddha Kapoor), the campus's cool girl who defies her well-heeled upbringing, you know it's a doomed affair. The central conflict is summed up when Madhav tells Riya if he is unsure if he will ever fit into her "English medium" world.
While the vibe of the trailer is intensely emo, much like Aashiqui 2, director Mohit Suri has revealed that it won't be all doom and gloom. In Bhagat's book, Riya's erratic behaviour had darker underpinnings. Suri has dispensed with that here, if news reports are to believed. Hopefully, it's not an omission he lives to regret.
