The trailer of Amazon Prime Video’s highly-anticipated boxing film Toofaan released earlier on Wednesday. The film stars Farhan Akhtar as Aziz Ali, a local goon from Mumbai who transforms into a national-level boxer after finding his true calling.
The trailer starts with stills of an older Ali, reeling from a traumatic past as a boxer who was banned for five years. There is a series of flashback sequences soon after, as Ali recalls the events that led him to the current situation. He starts off as a roadside ruffian who gets into petty brawls, when he meets the love of his life – a doctor, portrayed by Mrunal Thakur. She inspires him to take the high road and pursue a career in boxing. With the help of his coach, Nana Prabhu (Paresh Rawal), he then starts training to have a career worthy of respect.
The shots that follow suggest that he soon becomes a national rage, and starts getting recognition as ‘Toofaan’ (storm) – an alias given to him by his coach. However, situations take a turn for the worse after he lands into a controversy and is shamed by the media as well as his peers. As a result, he gets banned.
Now, as his ban finally gets lifted after five years of solitude, his wife encourages him to win his passion back. Ali, however, is now unfit and bitter, unable to find it in himself to return to a space that once broke his heart. And yet, his disposition is a clear reminder of what is missing from his life.
Toofaan, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, is the story of Ali’s grit and renaissance. It will be Mehra’s second venture with Akhtar in the lead after their 2013 hit Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
The film stars Farhan Akhtar, Mrunal Thakur, Paresh Rawal, Supriya Pathak and Vijay Raaz, and is set to stream on Amazon Prime Video from July 16.
