Stree Trailer Talk: A Horror Comedy Starring Rajkummar Rao

The trailer of Stree begins with the voiceover of Pankaj Tripathi, a local librarian. He educates the boys – Rajkummar Rao, a ladies tailor, and his friends, Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee – about the titular legend in the small town of Chanderi. She was a beautiful prostitute who every man in town desired for her body but none for her 'aatma'.

Enter the Shraddha Kapoor character who Rao immediately falls in love with, and who could well be Stree: She comes only during the Puja and then mysteriously disappears. "Abey, girlfriend bhutiya hai tumhari," says a character at one point.

Stree is written and produced by Raj & DK and like their most successful outing Go Goa Gone (a zombie comedy) this one's a horror comedy. Expect it to tie the story with contemporary issues: from Aadhar links to the conversation around gender stereotypes; the film's tagline is a twist on the iconic Hindi film line – 'Mard ko dard hoga.'

Directed by Amar Kaushik, and co-produced by Dinesh Vijan, Stree will release on 31 August.
