Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai is Anurag Kashyap in the Anurag Kashyap terrain of the warped human-scape. Having flirted with love in Manmarziyan, he is back to the grit of Mumbai. This time, a middle-class household with flaking walls and clogged pipes, whose sole earning member is Saiyami Kher’s character, a banker. She finds that her house pipe leaks money; it’s literally pouring bucks! Her musician-husband, Roshan Mathew, a migrant from the South, is attempting to make it big in the city while she decides what is to be done with the money. (But like in the poster, he is not the focus of the story, she is.) When Demonetization strikes, all this windfall is suddenly cast into doubt. From here, the world of middle-class aspiration seems to unspool.
Directed by Kashyap, written by Nihit Bhave, and starring Saiyami Kher (last seen on the big-screen in Mirzya) and Roshan Mathew (whose acting in Moothon got him noticed by Kashyap who produced that film), this film premiers on Netflix on June 5.
