Karan Johar’s much anticipated film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani releases in theatres on July 28. The film has been heavily praised by the critics and applauded by a humongous audience. At Film Companion, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the film with Johar, where he spoke about the extravagant sets, copying the Sanjay Leela Bhansali aesthetics, paying homage to Yash Chopra and much more.

“I copied a Yash Chopra song like I copied a Sanjay Bhansali set,” said Johar in an interview with Anupama Chopra.

Johar candidly spoke about accepting that he copied the Bhansali aesthetic in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, “My brief to Amrita was let's do a Sanjay Bhansali and this is always a homage in the way that one would say it with a lot of love and respect, we all know its a copy, I mean it's copied, its very much sanjay bhansali's aesthetic, it's not mine, its beautiful aesthetic that I have copied so I'm very happy to say it, put it on record,” he said.

Having said that, the director also felt that although the sets were copied the sequences in the film still stand out, “I don't want anyone to say that I in any way thought that I was doing something different, no but the sequence was beyond the set.” Johar concluded.

Directed by Johar, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani has an ensemble cast which includes veteran actors like Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi. The other supporting cast has Kshitee Jog, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly and Aamir Bashir.
