Kunchacko Boban On Why He Is Scared Of Dubbing

Kunchacko Boban, who will next be seen in Nna Thaan Case Kodu, was thrilled about working in the Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval courtroom drama for two reasons – the joy of working with newcomers and doing sync sound (the technique of recording sound and dialogue during filming as against to dubbing).

The truth is, I am scared of dubbing, says Boban in an interview with Vishal Menon. "I didn't dub my first film. It was dubbed by Krishnachandran (Malayalam film voice actor) chettan. I started dubbing from my second film onwards, but I am still very scared of dubbing. Once shooting gets wrapped up, we take a break and come back to recreate the same characters and situations at the dubbing studio. This is a huge task. It's impossible to recreate that same emotions. That's a different terrain, different ambience, different emotion. The effect of saying a dialogue in the heat after running and being tired is very different from trying to recreate the same, sitting in an AC room," he says.

Only talented geniuses such as Mohanlal and Mammootty can recreate the same emotions from the time of filming, at a dubbing studio, the actor observes. "Apart from them, I don't know how many people can recreate the same emotion. It was with the movie Virus that I got into sync sound. In a film like Virus, one had to deliver dialogues that had important technical and medical terms. It was a tremendous learning experience to study the lines by heart and deliver it live with sync sound," he says.

Learning dialogues by heart might be kind of a task, but once that's sorted, the process becomes enjoyable, Boban notes. "I soon became an addict to sync sound. Movies like Nayattu and Pada were sync sound… Nna Thaan Case Kodu is also in sync. With sync sound, everything is natural and the sounds are not always correct. Certain words may not be legible or audible, and there might be cracks in voices. With dubbing, all such inaccuracies can be corrected. In sync sound, the character's exact voice gets captured in live sound," he says.

The film, which features a lot of newcomers, was also exciting for Boban, for that very reason. "When working with a group of newcomers, one is not aware about how they might emote or deliver their dialogues. Their meter might be very different. For example, the dialogue delivery of the actor who plays an SA in the film was different. Even his attitude towards the role was quite unique and that excited me," the actor says.

Nna Thaan Case Kodu, which also features actress Gayathrie Shankar in her Malayalam acting debut, will hit the theatres on August 11.
