We sat down for an interview with Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal ahead of the release of their film Manmarziyaan, directed by Anurag Kashyap. Abhishek told us the three best pieces of acting advice he’s got:
1. Have something to lose
My dear friend Hrithik (Roshan) said something to me many years ago. We were at a success bash of Dhoom, which was considered my first successful film. He came and hugged me because he had been through my journey. He said, “I just want to tell you, your struggle starts now. You just gave your first hit, now the tough part starts. But let me tell you, this is what is going to make you a better actor, because now you have something to lose.” That made a lot of sense to me.
2. Use glycerin
My unsolicited advice to any new young actor is please use glycerin because it picks up light a lot better than your actual tears do. This is one of the things Anupam (Kher) uncle told me during one of our sessions because I wasn’t able to break down. And he said don’t worry because glycerin picks up light better. And it’s really true. The only problem is once the first tear drops, then it has to be you.
3. Check your teeth, check your nose
The best practical tip I’ve got is from my wife (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) while shooting Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke– check your teeth, check your nose. Suddenly the audiences realises this for time immemorial, so that’s what he had for lunch!
