Ever since news broke that director Venkat Prabhu and actor STR would collaborate on a film (#VP09, the director’s 9th), there has been a lot of excitement. Owing to the duo’s massive popularity, the hype among fans has been steadily building with each passing day. There was incessant speculation over the film’s title and tagline, with a few fans guessing that it would be Athiradi – A Venkat Prabhu Action. With the film’s official title and tagline being announced today, and a poster being released, all such rumours have been dispelled.

We now know that the film is called Maanaadu – A Venkat Prabhu Politics. The poster features massive silhouette-style cut-outs of political leaders and party flags in a twilight setting. The word ‘Maanaadu’ (a public political conference) is displayed on a roadside wall, in an obvious pop-culture political reference.

In a recent interview, the director had said that he and STR go back a long way and are like brothers. He also said that he was excited about working with a star who has such a huge fan base. We spoke to Venkat Prabhu to find out more about the film:

“STR will have a different style of characterization. The film will be a political thriller, a genre that neither of us has taken up yet. We want to surprise the audience with a film that they would never have expected from the two of us. We will begin shooting either in September-end or October, and plan to release it in the summer of 2019. This will be the next film that STR will start shooting. We will announce the other cast and crew members one by one. All the names that you are reading now are unconfirmed.”

The director added that he plans to release his next, Party on August 24th. The film, a multi-starrer set in Fiji, was recently in the news after Suriya and Karthi got together to sing a party track (‘Cha Cha Charey’) for it. More celebrity singers will record the film’s remaining four songs.
