In our second Inside A Scene with Imtiaz Ali, we ask him to take us behind one of our favourite scenes in Tamasha (2015). In this scene, Ved and Tara (played by Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone) have an argument at a coffee shop or as Ali calls it, a ‘lover’s squabble’. The scene is intense and as Ali describes it, ‘shameful’. The idea struck Ali after he saw a girl sitting on a bench and crying during one of his travels across Europe.
Given Ved’s unpredictable behaviour in the film, especially in this scene, a common question that Ali is often asked is whether he was suffering from a bipolar disorder. “To clarify, bipolar is a clinical condition. I’m not going to say it was this because it’s a very technical term.”
One of the scene’s most distinct moments is the use of A.R. Rahman‘s stunning composition, ‘Agar Tum Saath Ho’ sung by Alka Yagnik. Ali tells us about how the song went through four revisions before making it to the movie. “We made one version for this situation that everyone liked. Deepika really loves that song. Later Rahman sir said should we try again. And I thought why is this man doing this? It’s a great song!”
