From The Kamal-Lokesh Project To Gentleman 2, Ten Tamil Films Announced On The Sidelines Of The Pandemic

Although the aftereffects of the pandemic on the film industry remain unknown, some filmmakers have decided to make movies, come what may.
From The Kamal-Lokesh Project To Gentleman 2, Ten Tamil Films Announced On The Sidelines Of The Pandemic

Many films starring the big names in Tamil cinema have been announced, and a few of them feature unlikely actor-director combinations. There are sequels too, of much loved films. These films should be ready for viewing once the pandemic is out of the way, and theatres open with their regular strength.

Kamal Haasan 232

Kamal Haasan, who has never tired of ushering in innovation (with his choice of scripts and unconventional roles), is back at it again as he joins hands with young filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj. The poster that was released almost two months ago is made up of guns that prop up the actor's face — it also says, "Once upon a time there lived a ghost." With Anirudh Ravichander as the composer, you can expect a terrific new-age action thriller.

Untitled Vijay-Starrer

Vijay has been running between the pillars erected by AR Murugadoss and Atlee for a while now. He seems to trust them more than other directors, and their combinations have also proven successful (in varying degrees, of course). After Thuppakki, Kaththi and Sarkar, it looks like the actor is teaming up with the Indian Nolan again after a gap of two years. Since COVID-19 is still very much around, it may take quite some time for principal photography to begin on this Murugadoss project.

Untitled Film Featuring Vikram and Dhruv Vikram

Director Karthik Subbaraj has moved from one project to another tirelessly in recent times. It requires a great amount of planning and dedication to achieve such spotless output. We all know Vikram is pushing his son Dhruv's career forward in all ways possible, and that's where he probably found the maker of Petta. If things fall into place and the movie turns out to be great, maybe the audiences will go easy on the hero of the 'Bala Mama' cut.

If there's one actor whose filmography keeps growing despite the ups and downs of the movie world, it's none other than Vijay Sethupathi. He's undoubtedly the busiest actor at the moment. And, more importantly, he's expanding his boundaries bit-by-bit — he'll soon be seen in major Hindi and Telugu films. The Muttiah Muralitharan biopic, directed by M S Sripathy, will be another feather in his cap. Also, Vijay Sethupathi might be seen in a French beard à la the Panchathanthiram men.

Saani Kaayidham

Who would have thought that the director of quasi-romantic movies such as Kaadhal Kondein and 7G Rainbow Colony would star alongside Keerthy Suresh in an action drama? Although the poster and the star-cast didn't create much of a flutter when it was initially released, there'll be a lot of talk once the trailer hits YouTube for sure. Arun Matheswaran, who penned dialogues for Sudha Kongara's Irudhi Suttru a few years ago, is taking a big step with this film. It needs to be seen if the gamble is worth it.

When Vaadivasal, with Suriya as actor and Vetri Maaran as director, was announced, social media was abuzz with euphoria as it was a coming together of the titans. But, within a few minutes, many fans dissed the poster as they thought it wasn't up to the mark. Well, if the final version of the movie is close to the filmmaker's vision (remember Aadukalam and Vada Chennai), you can consider it a win for the team and the viewers.

Untitled Simbu and Nidhhi Agerwal Starrer

Simbu has been in the news for many reasons this year. Now, it's for an untitled feature to be directed by Suseenthiran. It's said that he's planning to shoot the movie in a single stretch. That is a huge task in these trying times, but let's hope it brings back Simbu from the abyss. Also, this is going to be a new terrain for Nidhhi in Tamil cinema.

Gentleman 2

Nearly three decades after Gentleman wowed the masses, producer KT Kunjumon has announced a sequel without revealing the names of the cast and crew members. It's said that the film will be shot in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi with a new set of actors next year, but it will definitely be difficult for the team to achieve the cult status of Shankar's directorial debut.

Pichaikkaran 2

When Vijay Antony was trying to establish himself as an actor, Sasi's Pichaikkaran came to him as a breath of fresh air. The dubbed version in Telugu also enjoyed great success and it showed that the makers had a golden goose in hand. The sequel will be directed by Priya Krishnaswamy (her movie Baaram (2018) won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil).

Remake Of Article 15

Udhayanidhi Stalin seems to have taken a liking to remakes – Manithan was a remake of Jolly LLB and Nimir was a remake of Maheshinte Prathikaaram. Following that trend, he'll be seen in the remake of Article 15. While the original was directed by Anubhav Sinha and starred the impeccable Ayushmann Khurrana, the remake will be handled by Arunraja Kamaraj.

Side Note: While many older stars have stayed away from film sets since March, some teams have shot the remaining portions of their respective movies. These include Bakkiyaraj Kannan's Sulthan, starring Karthi and Rashmika Mandanna, and debut director Satish Selvakumar's Bachelor, featuring GV Prakash Kumar and Divya Bharathi. Many more films that are currently under-production may be sold to OTT platforms in the coming months. And, theatrical releases for the likes of Master may have to wait.
