Tamizh Padam 2.0 Teaser Talk: Vivegam, Mersal, Vikram Vedha – The Spoof Comedy Spares No One
Tamizh Padam, which was released in 2010, was a rage. It was a spoof on the Tamil film industry and its celebrated elements; a format completely new to the audience. Director C.S. Amudhan boldly took digs at popular films with big stars. This turned out to be a highly enjoyable experience for viewers and profitable for its makers. It also made its hero Shiva the new star on the comedy horizon.
Eight years on, the second part Tamizh Padam 2.0, also known as TP 2.0 – a direct reference to Shankar's 2.0 – is on its way this July. The technical team has largely been retained for the sequel, except cinematographer Gopi Amarnath, who has replaced Nirav Shah.
Continuing the Tamizh Padam legacy, popular films and scenes have been spoofed this time around too. In its 41 sec teaser, we see director Amudhan take digs at big films like Vivegam, Mersal, Thuppakki, Mankatha, 24, VIP, Maan Karate, Thupparivaalan, Aambala and Neethane En Ponvasantham, to name a few. TP 2.0's producer Sashikanth's much celebrated recent blockbuster Vikram Vedha hasn't been spared either!
Responding to the phenomenal response to the teaser, the film's editor T.S.Suresh told us, "It's been 8 years since the release of the first part and we wanted to give more to the audience. Social media has boomed in a big way now; it was almost non-existent back then. Since the first part continues to be a very popular film, we've milked its brand value and tried to make it even more interesting in the second part."
In the teaser, Amudhan has taken potshots at Vishal's anti-piracy crusades. The cheekily named 'Mallya Sarbhath Kadai' and 'Sathyaraj Alva Kadai' have also been noted by social media observers. The photo frame of Shiva being felicitated with a medal by Barack Obama is the kind of clip that is bound to go viral. In the recent Tamil release Chennai 2 Singapore, the principal crew members took a road trip from Chennai to Singapore as a part of the promotional campaign. In the TP 2.0 teaser we see a bus with the banner Chennai to Colombo!
"We've spoofed films, new and old, and also touched pop culture elements and current affairs from around the world. People are quite sportive and mature nowadays and I don't see anyone taking offense to what we've shown in the film. And, we've not just spoofed bad films; we've also taken a mass scene from the blockbuster Vikram Vedha and given it a totally different spin," added Suresh.
The film will also see actors like Kasthuri (repeating her special dance number appearance for the sequel), Chetan, R.Soundarrajan, Mano Bala and Santhana Bharathi. Iswarya Menon is the lead heroine while Disha Pandey from the first part also makes a return.
