The trailer for Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu begins with the declaration that everything in India happens “Ram bharose” (thanks to Ram). We are then informed that the Indian government has requested permission to demolish the “Ram Setu”, which is an ancient underwater structure and, in the film, from the age of the Hindu epic Ramayana. Kumar, a long-haired archaeologist, is brought on board to embark on an archaeological expedition to the Ram Setu. To help him out, he has Jaqueline Fernandez, Satya Dev and a special suit which looks like Stay Puft Marshmallow Man’s desi cousin (only instead of hands, it has little whisks at the end of its stubby arms). On a gleaming screen, someone points at Sri Lanka and in case you thought that the country has had enough problems of late, it seems Ram Setu is intent upon adding to Sri Lanka’s lot by bringing this team of researchers, helicopters and many other strange gadgets to its shores. The adventure will take Kumar and his team to a range of exotic places, including caves with tusks on walls, dense forests, and a dusty, mountainous place where mysterious bad guys (who wave flags with Islamic-looking calligraphy) come at Kumar. At one point, Kumar informs everyone that itihas (history) means “it does happen”. (Arguably that should be “it did happen”, but no one said archaeologists need to be good with grammar.) At another point, we see Kumar on a train, reading a book that has “Ancient Sri Lanka” printed large on the cover — because even experts need to brush up on their basics. The climax of the trailer shows Kumar rising out of the water, carrying on his shoulder a large yellow slab that we can only presume is a 7,000-year old stone slab.

Sharing the trailer on his Instagram handle Kumar wrote, “You loved the first glimpse of #RamSetu…Hope you show even more love to the trailer.और इस दिवाली, आइये अपने पूरे परिवार के साथ राम सेतु की दुनिया का हिस्सा बनने| (Come join this Diwali with your family and witness the history of Ram Setu) #RamSetu. 25th October. Ram Setu also stars Fernandez, Nushrratt Bharuccha and south actor Satya Dev. The film is directed by Abhishek Sharma and the creative producer is Chandraprakash Dwivedi, who directed Samrat Prithviraj (2022). The film releases on October 25.
