Emmy 2018 Predictions: Who Should Win, Who Will Win

The Awesome TV Show host lists the probable winners in the drama and comedy categories for television's biggest awards ceremony
Emmy 2018 Predictions: Who Should Win, Who Will Win

The Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony is just around the corner and what better time to look back at the eventful year it has been for television? For anybody still unacquainted, the Emmys are regarded as the highest achievement in television – the equivalent of what the Oscars are to movies. This year, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will honor the best of American primetime television content from June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018. The ceremony will take place from 5:30am (IST) on Monday, 18th September and will be available to stream on Hotstar. Here are my predictions for some of the awards that will be handed out:

IN THE COMEDY CATEGORY

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Donald Glover (Atlanta)
Bill Hader (Barry)
Anthony Anderson (Black-ish)
William H. Macy (Shameless)
Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm)
Ted Danson (The Good Place)

Who Can Win: Bill Hader or Larry David can win this and those would be terrible choices because while Bill Hader's dramatic turn was great it wasn't as funny, and Larry David is just mean.

Who Will Probably Win: Donald Glover probably has this because he's on a high right now.

Who Should Win: Andy Samberg from Brooklyn Nine Nine but he's never even been nominated in this category. But in his absence, the actor who totally deserves to win is Ted Danson who is utterly fantastic on The Good Place.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Pamela Adlon (Better Things)
Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel)
Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish)
Allison Janney (Mom)
Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie)
Issa Rae (Insecure)

Who Can Win: Tracee Ellis Ross can win this because she won a Golden Globe in 2016 but hasn't ever won an Emmy, thanks to Julia Louis Dreyfus who has won 200 times.

Who Will Probably Win: Rachel Brosnahan's got this for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel because she's incredible.

Who Should Win: Last year I would have screamed Alison Brie because she's so great in GLOW but this year Rachel's the one for me, all the way.

Outstanding Comedy Series

Atlanta (FX)
Barry (HBO)
Black-ish (ABC)
Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
GLOW (Netflix)
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)
Silicon Valley (HBO)
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix)

Who Can Win: Somehow Barry has got an enormous amount of critical acclaim this season. Even though I felt the series became boring mid-season onwards, it has a chance.

Who Will Probably Win: It's most likely Atlanta because for the first time in years, Veep isn't nominated. And thank god, because it sucked this season. So Donald Glover's Atlanta may totally get it.

Who Should Win: Bojack Horseman or Mozart In The Jungle or The Good Place should wing this or at least get nominated dammit. But among these nominations, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has my heart and I'll be rooting for it!

ALSO

Among Supporting Actor and Actress in Comedy, I'm rooting for Brian Tyree Henry from Atlanta and Betty Gilpin from GLOW but both are unlikely to win because this is the Emmys.

IN THE DRAMA CATEGORY

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Jason Bateman (Ozark)
Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us)
Ed Harris (Westworld)
Matthew Rhys (The Americans)
Milo Ventimiglia (This Is Us)
Jeffrey Wright (Westworld)

Who Can Win: Milo Ventimiglia may win this because spoiler alert: Jack dies.

Who Will Probably Win: The Emmys love repeat winners so Sterling K. Brown may get this again but I love Sterling K. Brown and would like him to win every year till he dies. And I hope he doesn't ever die.

Who Should Win: Umm.. Bob Odenkirk maybe? Or Damian Lewis? Or Paul Giamatti? Or JK Simmons for Counterpart? But again, they aren't nominated even though Jason Bateman has been for the shitty Ozark. From the nominations I'm rooting for Matthew Rhys and I hope he gets it.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Claire Foy (The Crown)
Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black)
Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale)
Sandra Oh (Killing Eve)
Keri Russell (The Americans)
Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld)

Who Can Win: Sandra Oh can totally win this because she's amazing in Killing Eve and also in general.

Who Will Probably Win: I'm dreading Elisabeth Moss winning this because, "Wow, so dark, such a dystopian performance – let's give awards."

Who Should Win: Christine Baranski for The Good Fight maybe? But this is the last year Keri Russell can win it for The Americans so make it happen Emmys!

Outstanding Drama Series

The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu)
Game of Thrones (HBO)
This Is Us (NBC)
The Crown (Netflix)
The Americans (FX)
Stranger Things (Netflix)
Westworld (HBO)

Who Can Win: Game of Thrones can totally win this season because there was a war with a fire-breathing dragon, in case you missed it.

Who Will Probably Win: Ugh. The Handmaid's Tale is probably going to win it because it is dark and gruesome and depressing and critically acclaimed even though it had a really bad second season.

Who Should Win: Billions or The Good Fight but they aren't even nominated. So I am going to be rooting for The Americans because this was its last season and it deserves a win.

ALSO

Among Supporting Actor and Actress in Drama, I'm rooting for David Harbour from Atlanta and Stranger Things and Lena Headey for Game of Thrones but both are unlikely to win because this is the Emmys.

I'd love to see your predictions in the comments below.
