Nerkonda Paarvai, Ka Pae Ranasingam, House Owner…Tamil Films To Watch If You’ve Subscribed To ZEE5

There are some films that make for deeply satisfying repeat watches. Some of the 16 films in this ZEE5 list fall in that category. Some will leave you smiling through your tears, and others are laugh fests. There's some action too! 

Ka Pae Ranasingam 

Director: P Virumandi

This hard-hitting directorial debut of Virumandi narrates the story of Ariyanachi Ranasingam, played wonderfully by Aishwarya Rajesh, who struggles to bring home her deceased husband's mortal remains from abroad. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi in an extended cameo, along with Munishkanth, Vela Ramamoorthy and Rangaraj Pandey.

Gypsy 

Director: Raju Murugan

This is the director's third film after the critically-acclaimed Cuckoo (2014) and Joker (2016). Gypsy ran into censorship issues and opened to mixed reviews. Yet, this road movie has its moments that are worth watching. Starring Jiiva and Natasha Singh, the film also marks the Tamil debut of Malayalam stars Sunny Wayne and Lal.

Oh My Kadavule

Director: Ashwath Marimuthu
Inspired by the South Korean series Operation Proposal, this rom-com ended up a sleeper hit during its theatrical release. The cast includes Ashok Selvan, Ritika Singh, Sha Ra and Vani Bhojan. Also, did I mention there's Vijay Sethupathi in yet another cameo, playing the role of God!

Chennai, Palani, Mars 

Director: Biju Viswanath
Two junkies embark on a journey to Mars,  from Chennai via Palani! Sounds absurd? This worthwhile experimental flick with an outlandish plotline could be Tamil cinema's very own Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The film stars Praveen Raj and Rajesh Giriprasad, and director Biju Vishwanath collaborates with Vijay Sethupathi's production house after the success of Orange Mittai. 

Kennedy Club

Director: Suseenthiran

The core plot might have a certain resemblance to the Vijay-starrer Bigil, but director Suseenthiran gives this sports drama a grounded treatment. The film stars M Sasikumar, Bharathiraja and Meenakshi Govindarajan.

Nerkonda Paarvai

Director: H Vinoth

After the mammoth success of Theeran Adhigaram Ondru, director Vinoth teamed up with producer Boney Kapoor for this film starring Aijth, Shraddha Srinath, Abhirami and Rangaraj Pandey. A remake of the Bollywood hit Pink, starring Taapsee Pannu and Amitabh Bachchan, this film retained the soul of the original, while introducing a romance angle too — which introduced Vidya Balan to the Tamil audience.

Lock-Up

Director: SG Charles

A refreshing investigative thriller involving two corrupt cops, this film stars Vaibhav and Venkat Prabhu in the lead. Lock-Up comes across as a good watch among the list of bad-to-average OTT releases.

Kolamavu Kokila

Director: Nelson
On paper, the plot might sound like an intense narcotic drama, but director Nelson gives this subject a humorous spin — there's a one-sided love story between Yogi Babu and Nayanthara, and an ice-cream craving henchman too. Kolamavu Kokila joins the ranks of Soodhu Kavvum and Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom as an enjoyable  black comedy. The film also stars Saranya Ponvannan.

House Owner 

Director: Lakshmy Ramakrishnan

Actor-director Lakshmy Ramakrishnan is known for her films that throw the spotlight on relationships. This film too falls in the same mould. It is a heartwarming tale about love and compassion during unprecedented times. Set against the backdrop of the 2015 Chennai floods that affected many lives and homes, the film allows us an intimate peek into the lives of a couple in two different phases of their life. It stars Kishore and Sivaranjini as the older couple, and music is by Ghibran.

Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven 

Director: Sundar C

Sundar C's adaptation of the Telugu blockbuster Attarintiki Daredi stars Silambarasan, Megha Akash, Prabhu, and a long list of comic regulars. VRV might be the answer to a guilty pleasure watch during a lazy Sunday noon.

Thorati

Director: P Marimuthu

An extension to films such as Paruthiveeran and Subramaniyapuram that captured the earthy rawness of rural Tamil Nadu,  Thorati showcases the rural lifestyle of the 80s. The film stars Shaman Mithru and Sathyakala.

Naan Sirithal 

Director: Raana
Comedies based on medical conditions have witnessed an uptrend in recent times. This Hip Hop Tamizha and Iswarya Menon-starrer is one of them. There are some scenes in this flick that might tickle your funny bone. 

Taana

Director: Yuvaraj Subramani
If you are not particular about genre-centric films, this might be your pick. A comedy of errors, this weaves its way through various genres. Starring Vabhav and Nandita Swetha.

Dhanusu Raasi Neyargale 

Director: Sanjay Bharathi 

The film tells the story of Arjun (Harish Kalyan) who is an ardent believer in astrology, so much so, it takes over his entire life. The film also stars Digangana Suryavanshi, Reba Monica John, Yogi Babu and Pandiarajan.

Pyaar Prema Kaadhal

Director: Elan

This film, produced by Yuvan Shankar Raja, is your perfect date movie. There's love, it's entertaining, there's conflict and resolution. It helps that the leads — Harish Kalyan and Raiza Wilson — come up with effective performances. Music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja too.

Kayal 

Director: Prabu Solomon

Set against the backdrop of the 2004 tsunami, this love story follows a similar path to director Prabu Solomon's earlier ventures Mynaa and Thodari. The film stars Anandhi and Chandran, and a gorgeous landscape, again a trademark motif of the director!
