Inside the Box: Bhediya Crosses Rs. 30 Crore in Box Office Collections

Director Amar Kaushik’s Bhediya released last Friday and crossed the Rs. 30 crore mark in global collections on Monday. Produced by Dinesh Vijan under the banner of Maddock Films, Bhediya had an opening day collection of Rs 7.48 crore. The director-producer duo’s previous horror-comedy, Stree (2018), made Rs 6.82 crore on its first day and Rs 31.26 crore during its opening weekend. Bhediya, on the other hand, earned Rs 28.55 crore over the weekend, with Rs 9.57 crore coming in on Saturday and Rs 11.50 crore on Sunday. Yesterday, on its first Monday, the movie earned Rs 3.85 crore, which is lower than expectation.

Film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi said, “Bhediya’s numbers have been very encouraging, they’ve risen by the day. But it’s still not what it deserved to be for a film of that size and scale and with somebody like Varun Dhawan, who is very popular among kids. That’s an audience I think we needed to see coming to cinemas in bigger numbers, and that didn't happen. Having said that, with the upswing that we’ve seen from Friday to Saturday, Saturday to Sunday, and reasonably good sustenance on Monday and with no big ticket Hindi movie coming on December 2nd, Bhediya and Drishyam 2 should continue to march on till Avatar 2 releases.”

Bhediya follows a contractor named Bhaskar who is in Arunachal Pradesh to oversee the construction of a road. He gradually transforms into a werewolf after being bitten by one. Driven by instinct, Bhaskar becomes the polar opposite of who he was and finds himself becoming closer to the dogs that he hated until he was bitten. Bhediya had a lower opening collection than Dhawan’s previous release, Raj Mehta’s Jugjugg Jeeyo (Rs 9.28 crore). Sanon’s last, Ahmed Khan’s Heropanti 2, created an even smaller ripple on its first day (Rs 6.50 crore).
