The 96th Oscars — which opened with a middling monologue by Jimmy Kimmel — stood out for their 23 categories being honoured without any mishaps or faux pas that are usually traditional for the ceremony (remember the La La Land and Moonlight debacle?). There were very few surprises, chief among them being Emma Stone’s win for Poor Things in the Best Actress category over awards season-favourite Lily Gladstone for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer led with seven awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things won four Academy awards, most notably for Stone in the acting category and Holly Waddington in the costume design category.
