Even as the Academy nominated a record number of people of colour this year, all the major acting categories were won by white actors. Major upsets included Mj Rodriguez and Billy Porter for Pose – they were both counted as solid contenders for their lead performances in the final season of the FX drama. Mj Rodriguez’s nomination was historic – becoming the first trans actor to be nominated in the Best Actress in a Drama category. No Black directors were awarded this year too, and the Emmys maintained their record of no Black female directors winning in the major genre categories. As the telecast was hosted by Black people and the presenters included many people of colour, the contrast in the winners being overwhelmingly white was even more apparent this year.
It's really worth noting that in addition to the diverse assemblage of presenters/performers, everyone the #Emmys producers tapped to work the show is Black: Cedric the Entertainer, Reggie Watts, MC Lyte, Jon Batiste, Leon Bridges. All the labor, none of the hardware.
