If the French names and the long trains leave you confused, we are breaking down the fashion choices of our leading ladies at Cannes this year.
THE LABEL: Brandon Maxwell
HOW DO YOU SAY IT: Bran-dun Max-well
WHO IS HE: The American designer has a degree in photography, and started his career in fashion assisting some of the most influential stylists in Hollywood. Soon enough he found himself styling Lady Gaga and today they are not only best friends but he is the Fashion Director on her team. He launched his eponymous label in 2015 – the impeccable tailoring on his classic styles combined with their effortless sexiness make him a red carpet favourite for Naomi Campbell, Karlie Kloss and Michele Obama alike. Deepika is the first Bollywood actor to wear the designer to the red carpet, and we think the fluid silhouettes and timeless glamour make his designs quite a good fit to her.
OUR SAY: Her day of solids started off a bit shaky in the yellow Solace midi with bat sleeves. The colour might have been all sunshine but the awkward fit left a bit of a shadow on the entire presentation. Things got better in the course of the day with the pink Balenciaga mini that was fun, getting more visual interest by way of those whimsical Christian Louboutin heels.
It was a solid once again as she stepped out on the red carpet for her last appearance of the event in a one-shouldered emerald gown with a thigh-high slit. She may not have upped the ante in terms of the surprise quotient, but the flattering drape with its structural detailing worked well on the statuesque star. Dripping in diamonds, with the make-up and hair on point she looked absolutely stunning, and we’ll take it.
