From Kolamaavu Kokila’s Orey Oru To Koode’s Aararo – A Weekly Roundup Of Film Music

Orey Oru from Kolamaavu Kokila (Tamil)
The 3rd single from the Nayanthara starrer, Kolamaavu Kokila (CoCo), Orey Oru, is vintage Anirudh stuff! When Anirudh goes, 'Sathamaai naan azhudhithaan' in the anupallavi, you notice that the melody harks back to his association with Vignesh ShivN; Naanum Rowdy Thaan, in particular. And who wrote the lyrics for Orey Oru? Oh yes, Vignesh! This is a sparsely orchestrated song, and Keba's guitar is a legitimate third voice, besides Anirudh and Jonita. The composer scores in the way he layers Jonita's singing in a different pitch besides his own, and then reverses it in another phrase. An imaginative nuance that makes the song all the more enjoyable.
Thandora Kannaala from Kadaikutty Singam (Tamil)
D.Imman has been having a relatively less-busy time recently considering only one of this soundtracks (Tik Tik Tik) released in 2018, so far. Kadaikutty Singam's soundtrack is largely on predictable lines too, with one standout, in singer V.V. Prassanna's Thandora Kannaala. The jaunty rhythm and gorgeous melody is intact, in true Imman style.
Katheyondu Shuruvagide (Kannada)
Singer Sachin Warrier's composing journey is rather short, in films. His soundtrack for the Malayalam film Aanandam and the single he composed for Orayiram Kinakkalal (Aaha song) were extremely promising. Now, he ventures into another language, scoring 4 songs for the Kannada film Katheyondu Shuruvagide. He sings 2 songs from the film too – the tranquil lullaby, Bhoomi Baana Kaadambari, featuring S Nathan's clarinet, and the soundtrack's most energetic song, aptly called Good Morning! Sumesh's guitar and Jeevan Thomas's trumpet add to the bouncy song's enthusiasm. Sumesh's guitar easily stands out in Daariya Kaledukondide too, a really well-rounded, melodious package, featuring Leon de Souza and Inchara Rao. And Dheemtha, that starts surprisingly with a hat-tip to Bhoomi Baana, moves to Deepak Doddera's lead vocals, with the really catchy 'Manase manase' phrase. When Sangeetha Ravindranath joins in what is an unusually tangential tune in the anupallavi, she picks up the phrase, and both the singers join to close it in a warm union! Very good soundtrack, this!
Aagi Aagi from Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi (Telugu)
Composer Vivek Sagar is on a spree! After last week's Sammohanam, here's his new single from the upcoming Telugu film, Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi. Aagi Aagi is trademark Vivek, with a breezy, guitar-led sound, and a melody that is so easy on the ear. Anurag Kulkarni holds fort till the anupallavi when Manisha Eerabathini saunters in, amidst Vivek's favorite soft, jazzy sound.
Aararo from Koode (Malayalam)
To close this week, here's the latest single from director Anjali Menon's upcoming film, Koode. Supposed to be the remake of Marathi film Happy Journey, the film has Prithviraj and Nazriya playing estranged siblings, meeting in an unusual road-trip (played by Atul Kulkarni and Priya Bapat in Marathi). Interestingly, while Anjali got an outstanding and memorable score from Gopi Sundar for her last film, Bangalore Days (2014), she has opted for M.Jayachandran and "surprise* Raghu Dixit for Koode's music. The new single, Aararo is by Raghu Dixit, incidentally! Anne Amie is fantastic with her vocals in the intimate, guitar-led melody, reminiscent of Raghu's Kannada song from Happy New Year, Preetiya Hesare Neenu.
