Super 30 Trailer Talk: Hrithik Roshan Plays Maths Wizard Anand Kumar — Brown-Face, Accent And All

Long overdue — with director Vikas Bahl accused of sexual harassment allegations in the wake of the #MeToo movement, and the post-production issues that followed — the trailer of Super 30 is finally out.

Hrithik Roshan plays Anand Kumar – without a hint of how the Patna-based mathematician speaks in real life.

Kumar – who couldn't attend private tuitions when he was growing up because his father couldn't afford them – is credited to have made some of the country's toughest competitive exams such as IIT and JEE accessible to underprivileged students with his 'Super 30' programme.

Brown-faced, and with a drawl that comes off more as a parody than an authentic depiction of Kumar, Roshan doesn't seem to be playing Kumar so much as Bollywood's idea of how a 'Bihari' should talk and behave.

Shown as a genius with a knack for picking up talent, we see Roshan assembling his special batch of students. As The Phantom's "Unstoppable Now" plays snazzily in the background, Kumar motivates his students with 'anti-rich' rhetoric — with the film's awfully long punchline, 'Ab raja ka beta ab raja nahi banega…ab raja wahi banega jo haqdaar hoga' echoing the current political mood in the country.

Bahl, after being given a 'clean chit' by Reliance Entertainment following their investigation into the case, gets credit as the director.

Produced by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, Phantom Films and Reliance, the film is written by Sanjeev Dutta; the music is by Ajay-Atul and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya. The film also features Pankaj Tripathi, who we don't see much of.

Super 30 will release on July 12.
