Laila Majnu Trailer Talk: A Modern Update On The Love Legend, Imtiaz Ali Style

Their reputation – his (Avinash Tiwary) for being a womaniser and hers (Tripti Dimri) for being a flirt – precedes them. They are made for each other.

The new Laila Majnu update transports the tragic love legend to present-day Kashmir, a place that allows some of the Sufi madness that the story demands. The trailer begins with Kais (who is Majnu) jumping off a cliff… Laila's family doesn't approve. Something terrible happens. You know the story.

Laila Majnu is directed by Sajid Ali, but it has traces of films his brother Imtiaz Ali has made. A dishevelled Kais in a pheran roaming the mountains like a vagabond, or scenes from a traditional Kashmiri wedding, for instance, recall Rockstar and Highway. Imtiaz has co-written the film.

The songs, composed by sitar icon Niladri Kumar and indie musician Joi Barua, sounds promising.

Produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and Pi Films, Laila Majnu will release on 7 September.
