Bappi Lahiri has been part of Bollywood for more than 50 years, with his songs still finding a place in films today. The opening credits of Kumararaja’s Super Deluxe are set to his 1982 hit ‘I Am A Disco Dancer’, the Hindi trailer of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2 featured ‘Jhoom Jhoom Jhoom Baba’ and his song ‘Tamma Tamma Loge’ was heard in Shashank Khaitan‘s Badrinath Ki Dulhania. We asked him what it was about his music that makes it so relevant. Here’s what he said:
Mera music jo hai, mera sangeet jo hai, mere hisaab se main khud concert karta hu. Abhi, main two-and-a-half weeks Singapore me the, kabhi Goa me the, kabhi Muscat me the, toh kabhi Dubai me the. Toh 4-5 concert kiya maine taaki abhi Bombay mein thoda din itna bhagam bhaag nahi kar sakta hoon. Itna public pyaar karte hain, itna bachhe bachhe dance karte hai. Jo 1976 ka gaana hai, uspe bhi dance karte hai – woh Mahesh Bhatt ji ka picture tha, pehla commercial picture, Lahoo Ke Do Rang. Kab ka gaana hai, public ko pasand hai. Yeh abhi tak remix nahi hua, yeh baaki hai.
Jaise ‘tamma tamma loge tu premi’ (jab main gaata hoon), public gaata hai, ‘aha’. Ek accha gaana hai mera, very romantic song. Mera favourite hai Sharaabi picture ka, Amitabh Bacchan ji the – (main gaata hoon) ‘intaha ho gayi…’ public gaate hai, ‘intazaar ki…’
Yeh sab gaana jo hai na, abhi bhi lagta hai kal hi release hua.
Main pacchis saal pehele joh gaana diya, aaj bhi naya lagta hai public ke paas .Uske liye remix ho raha hai. Remix ka raaz yeh hai – joh bhi gaana aata hai, sab log sochte hai, ‘woh Bappi Lahiri ka jo hook hai woh le lo.’
