Gully Boy Trailer Talk: Groovy Ranveer Singh-Alia Bhatt Pairing, And 8 Mile-Inspired Rap Battles

Like 8 Miles, Eminem's real life-inspired film in which he played himself, the trailer of Gully Boy opens with Ranveer Singh's character finding himself in the middle of a rap battle with nothing to say. By the time we have reached the end of the trailer, and another rap battle, he has a story to tell.

We get a glimpse of the story: a hardscrabble life in a Muslim ghetto in Mumbai, an abusive father (Vijay Raaz), a protective mother (Amruta Subhash), the woman he falls in love with (Alia Bhatt), a woman who might have fallen in love with him (Kalki Koechlin), and scenes from the bustling, vibrant hip-hop culture that has taken over pockets of the city. Singh, switching between hoodies and plain shirts, learns to rap along the way.

A catchy soundtrack, with chants of 'Azadi' and the film's tagline 'Apna time Ayega' – music supervision by Ankur Tewari, the score by Karsh Kale and The Save Audio Collective, and poems by Javed Akhtar  – plays through. Gully Boy is inspired by the real life stories of rappers DIVINE and Naezy.

Directed by Zoya Akhtar, and written by her Reema Kagti, the film is produced by Excel Entertainment. It will release on 14 February.
