If the French names and the long trains leave you confused, we are breaking down the fashion choices of our leading ladies at Cannes this year.
THE LABEL: Marchesa
HOW DO YOU SAY IT: Mar – kay – sah
WHO ARE THEY: Known for their dreamy evening wear and couture, the label was launched by British designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig in 2004. It has been a part of many iconic red carpets internationally, with everyone from Selena Gomez to Sandra Bullock and Halle Berry having sported the label’s ultra feminine creations.
In Bollywood while a few leading ladies have worn Marchesa before, we have a feeling this look is the one that most are going to remember the label by.
OUR SAY: There is something similar in the Deepika Padukone and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan story – both Bollywood’s darlings and flawless beauties have consistently received backlash on their red carpet choices. It is no wonder then, as soon as Deepika was announced the ambassador for L’Oreal that Cannes 2017 became the fashion event of the year.
With her debut at the film festival red carpet would she give her critics more fodder, or allow her fans that one fabulous and fashionable look they have been waiting for? (we are choosing to ignore her underwhelming sari style at Cannes in 2010)
We are happy to report that her fans can today kick back and raise a glass of Merlot to her fabulous tulle Marchesa moment from Day 1. A red carpet no brainer, this unapologetically sexy, beautifully embellished deep wine hued gown is everything we were looking forward to from Deepika.
The perfect modern princess look to end the day, she started out well too – the actor sported a summery red and ruffled floral dress by Johanna Ortiz in the morning, and then later took it up a notch looking effortlessly cool in a top-knot and no-fuss blush slip dress by Galvan.
As safe and glam as this was, here’s hoping for a more jaw-dropping fashion moment on Day 2. Salut!
FC RATING: 4/5
