Throughout the length of Abhishek Chaubey's Sonchiriya, the band of Chambal dacoits are on the run from the cops, haunted by deeds of the past, and slowed by the load of guilt. Described by the director as a film about "daakus with existential crisis," Sonchiriya plays out like a chase movie while also dealing with issues such as caste. The film revolves around Man Singh and his men, who like all self-respecting dacoits, call themselves "baaghi" (rebels). The film is set during the decline of dacoity, around the time of Indira Gandhi's declaration of Emergency in 1975. Co-written by Sudip Sharma, Sonchiriya features strong performances by Manoj Bajpayee, Ranvir Shorey, Bhumi Pednekar, and Sushant Singh Rajput.
