Aligarh, which made the "best of" lists of nearly every Indian film critic in 2016, is the true story of Dr S. Ramchandra Siras, a professor of Marathi at Aligarh Muslim University. After a television sting operation outed him as a gay man, Siras was removed from the institution and spent the remainder of his life as an outcast.

The film, directed by Hansal Mehta, won accolades for its sensitive tackling of Siras's sexual orientation. The actors Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao were also widely praised for their outstanding performances. Bajpayee's portrayal of Siras was adjudged the Best Performance by an Actor at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in 2016.

Setting the template for this movie's excellence was the original screenplay written by Apurva Asrani; Asrani co-authored the story with Ishani Banerjee. Asrani is already a National Award-winning editor with films like Shahid and Satya to his credit. But with Aligarh, he proved himself a writer to be reckoned with.
