Here’s a recap of the significant stories in entertainment across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films, and sometimes the odd television series as well.

Kamal Haasan announces KH237 with directors Anbariv (Tamil)

Kamal Haasan’s lineup of films seems to be getting bigger by the day as he adds yet another film to his slate. The actor is currently awaiting the release of Shankar's Indian 2. He will also be seen collaborating with H Vinoth on KH233 and Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life. Now, the actor has announced that he will be starring in action directors Anbariv’s debut feature film KH237. The film is produced by Haasan himself along with R Mahendran under the RKFI banner. The actor will also be seen in Kalki 2899 AD and is expected to be part of Lokesh Cinematic Universe in subsequent sequels.

Aishwarya Rajesh’s next gets a title (Tamil)

On the occasion of Aishwarya Rajesh’s birthday, the makers of her next film recently released a teaser to announce the title of the film. Titled Sister, the teaser shows Rajesh as a nurse, who wields a gun as well as a syringe. The teaser shows her in a badass avatar, hinting it to be an action comedy. Yogi Babu and Redin Kingsley receive top billing as her co-stars in the film.

Sister is directed by Savari Muthu in his directorial debut. He is credited as a writer on films such as Mark Antony (2023), Annaatthe (2021), and Partner (2023). The film is produced by Blaze Kannan under the Dwarka Studios banner. D Imman handles the music while Thamizh Azhagan cranks the camera. Sunil Reddy, Santhana Bharathi, Arjun Chidambaram, and Bigs are listed as actors in supporting roles.

Kamal – Shine Tom Chacko movie Vivekanandan Viralaanu gets a trailer (Malayalam)

This new offering from legendary director Kamal is a comedy about the perils of excessive social media fame and explores the dual life of a seemingly normal person, which is upended when he becomes famous for all the wrong reasons. The makers recently released the film's trailer. The film features Shine Tom Chacko, Swasika, Grace Anthony, Johnny Anthony and Mareena Michael Kurisingal. Prakash Velayudhan has served as the cinematographer, while Ranjan Pramod has handled the editing. Vivekanandan Viralaanu will hit the screens on January 19.

Keerthy Suresh’s Raghu Thatha gets a teaser (Tamil)

Keerthy Suresh is all set to star in her next film Raghu Thatha. The makers of the film recently released the teaser which sets up the plot to be against Hindi imposition. Suresh plays the role of a cop in training. Suman Kumar helms the project in his directorial debut. He is known as one of the writers of Family Man. The star cast includes MS Bhaskar, Devadarshini, Ravindra Vijay, Anandsamy, and Rajesh Balakrishnan. Hombale Films is producing the film with Sean Roldan handling the music and Yamini Yagnamurthy handling the cinematography.

Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, and Gautam Karthik join the cast of Thug Life (Tamil)

The upcoming Kamal Haasan-starrer Thug Life seems to be getting bigger by the day. The Mani Ratnam directorial already has thespian Haasan starring alongside Mani Ratnam alums such as Jayam Ravi, Dulquer Salman, and Trisha Krishnan. Now, the makers have announced that Malayalam actors Joju George, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Tamil actor Gautham Karthik will also feature in the gangster action film. Karthik and Lekshmi reunite with Mani Ratnam after his debut film Kadal.

Thug Life is directed by Mani Ratnam who co-writes the film along with Kamal Haasan. It is backed by both of their home production houses Madras Talkies and Raajkamal Films International along with Udhyanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies. The film is also said to star Nasser and Abhiraami, who will reunite with Kamal Haasan after Virumandi. AR Rahman provides the music while Ravi K Chandran handles the cinematography. Anbariv are the stunt coordinators in the film.

Prabhas’ Kalki 2898AD gets a release date (Telugu)

The makers of Prabhas’ sci-fi blockbuster Kalki 2898 AD have announced the release date of the film. Earlier, the film was supposed to be released on January 12, but the makers pushed the date due to various reasons. Now, the makers have announced that the sci-fi dystopian film will be released on May 9, 2024.

Kalki 2898 AD is written and directed by Nag Ashwin, who directed the acclaimed biopic Mahanati. It is produced by Aswani Dutt under the Vyjayanthi Movies banner. Santhosh Narayanan composes the music for the film while Djordje Stojiljkovic and Kotagiri Venkateshwara Rao handle the cinematography and editing. The film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, and Pasupathy.

Jr. NTR’s Devara gets first glimpse (Telugu)

Jr. NTR is all set to make a comeback to the big screens this year with the action drama Devara: Part 1. The actor was last seen in SS Rajamouli’s sensational commercial entertainer RRR, along with Ram Charan. Now, he collaborates with director Koratala Siva to bring another period drama.

The actor announced that the first glimpse video of Devara: Part 1 would be revealed on January 8. The film also stars Jahnavi Kapoor in her South Indian debut, as well as Saif Ali Khan and Prakash Raj. Anirudh Ravichander composes the music while R Ratnavelu and Sreekar Prasad handle the cinematography and editing respectively. The film is said to be a period drama and is scheduled to be released on April 5.

New poster from Varshangalkku Shesham out (Malayalam)

After the feel good entertainer Hridayam, Vineeth Sreenivasan's next directorial outing is Varshangalkku Shehsam. The film stars Dhyan Sreenivasan and Pranav Mohanlal in the lead. Recently, the makers unveiled a new poster to wish Aju Varghese on his birthday. Notedly, the first look poster was earlier unveiled on Dhyan Sreenivasan's birthday.

Written by Vineeth Sreenivasan, the film co-stars Nivin Pauly, Aju Varghese, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Basil Joseph, Neeraj Madhav and Vineeth Sreenivasan, among others. Varshangalkku Shehsam has cinematography by Viswajith, music by Amrit Ramnath and editing by Ranjan Abraham. It is produced by Maryland Cinemas,

Mammootty’s Bramayugam gets its first teaser (Malayalam)

The makers of the much-awaited folk horror film Bramayugam unveiled its first teaser. The film has been hyped ever since the black and white poster of Mammootty was released, seeing him in an antagonistic avatar. The teaser builds on the horror aspects of the film. 

Bramayugam is written and directed by Rahul Sadasivan. It is backed by Ramachandra Chakravarthy and S Sasikanth under the Night Shift Studios and Y Not Studios banner. The film also stars Arjun Ashokan and Siddarth Bharathan. Christo Xavier handles the music while Shehnad Jalal handles the cinematography.

New poster for Prithviraj’s Aadujeevitham is out (Malayalam)

The makers of the Prithviraj starrer Aadujeevitham recently released a new poster for the film. The poster sees Prithviraj in an intense look, with a scarred face and unkempt beard looking at the camera. The film follows the story of a Malayali immigrant from Kerala who goes missing in Saudi Arabia after traveling there for work. It is based on the popular novel of the same name by writer Benyamin.

The film adaptation has been in the making for over a decade and has finally come to fruition. Directed by Blessy, the film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role, along with Jimmy Jean-Louis and Amala Paul. It has AR Rahman as the music director and Sunil KS as the cinematographer. Sreekar Prasad handles the editing.

Tovino’s Anweshippin Kandethum gets a teaser (Malayalam)

Tovino Thomas’ next release will be the investigative thriller Anweshippin Kandethum, in which he will be seen as a police officer. The makers of the film released the first teaser of the thriller which sees Tovino investigating a murder. The short teaser reveals nothing about the plot except that the suspects are endless in the film. It is underscored by Santhosh Narayanan’s eerie background music.

Anweshippin Kandethum is directed by debutant Darwin Kuriakose from a script by Jinu Abraham. It stars Siddique, Indrans, Shammy Thilakan, Baburaj, Vineeth Thattil, Ramya Suvi, Harisree Ashokan and Rahul Rajagopal. It is produced by Kuriakose along with his brother Dolwin Kuriakose under the Theater of Dreams banner. Gautham Shankar handles the cinematography while Santhosh Narayanan handles the music. It is set to release on February 9.

Premier Padmini team to reunite for another film (Kannada)

Actor Pramod, who was last seen in a supporting role in Prashanth Neel’s action thriller Salaar Part 1: Ceasefire, is all set to reunite with his Premier Padmini team in another film. Currently titled Production No. 2, the film is produced by Shruthi Naidu and is directed by Ramesh Indira, both of whom collaborated on Premier Padmini. Indira is known for his character of Somu in last year’s hit romantic drama Saptha Sagaradaache Ello.

The film was announced on the occasion of Pramod’s birthday with a poster showing a serene landscape double-exposed to a shot of a bike with a pair of hands lighting up a cigarette in front of them. The film is said to be a youthful entertainer. There were plans for a sequel to Premier Padmini, but those plans seem to be paused at the moment.

Vijay Raghavendra’s Case of Kondana gets a trailer (Kannada)

Actor Vijay Raghavendra is all set to don the police uniform yet again after Seetharam Binoy with the investigative thriller Case of Kondana. The makers of the film recently released its trailer which sets up the story in a fictional town where four characters’ stories intertwine due to a murderer in the town. The film also stars Bhavana Menon, Kushee Ravi, Rangayana Raghu, and Sundar Raj. It is directed by Deviprasad Shetty and is backed by him along with Sathwik Hebbar. Gagan Baderiya handles the music. The film is set to release on January 26.

Arvind Sastry’s Bisi Bisi Ice Cream gets its first trailer (Kannada)

Director Arvind Sastry, who is known for his thrillers Kahi and Alidu Ulidvaru, is back in the director’s chair with the neo-noir thriller Bisi Bisi Ice Cream. The film starring Aravinnd Iyer and Siri Ravikumar recently received its first trailer. It sees Iyer play an aged cab driver who is growing weaker by the day. His life changes for the worse when he encounters a mysterious woman. The film also stars Gopalkrishna Deshpande in a pivotal role.

Bisi Bisi Ice Cream is written, edited, and directed by Arvind Sastry and is produced by Akshara Bharadwaj under the Boiled Beans production banner. The film also stars Sonu Venugopal, Shanil Guru, and Sunil Raghavendra. Nakul Abhyankar handles the music while Enosh Olivera handles the cinematography.

Pruthvi Ambar’s Juni gets a release date (Kannada)

Actor Pruthvi Ambar of Dia fame will be starring in the romantic comedy Juni next. He plays a chef in the film which also stars Rishika Nayak. The makers of the rom-com have announced that the film will be released on February 9. The film is directed by debutante Vaibhav Madhav, who previously helmed a short film and is an alumnus of the Prague Film Institute. Juni is produced by Mohan Kumar and Shreyas VS under the Trishul Creations banner. Nakul Abhyankar provides the music while Ajin B and Jitin Das handle the cinematography.
