Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce (English)

Following the humongous box office success of Taylor Swift’s feature-length concert film, it is Beyonce’s turn to come out with her version. This nonlinear tone poem will cover the Renaissance World Tour, from its inception to its opening in Stockholm, Sweden, to the finale in Kansas City, Missouri. The film is being helmed by Beyonce and Ed Burke.

Sarkaaru Noukari (Telugu)

When: January 1

This social drama features the story of an everyday government employee, who embarks on a one-man fight against the system. Starring Akash Goparaju, Bhavana Vazhapandal and Mani Chandana in the lead roles, the film will chart the hero’s attempts at changing the ideology of the masses for social utility. The film is directed by Ganganamoni Shekar.

Anyone But You (English)

When: January 4

A callback to a breezier kind of romantic comedy that hinged on the insane on-screen chemistry of its leads, this Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell starrer deals with a couple whose initial curiosity in each other, gives way to an unfounded sense of boredom. However, things take a turn when they decide to stick with each other while stuck at a destination wedding, only to fall hopelessly in love all over again. This film is directed by Will Gluck.

Dream Scenario (English)

When: January 5

This tale of a tenured college professor, who ends up being a subject of the world’s dreams is a clever take down of cancel-culture and our increasing dependence on other people’s spaces as social media gains traction. Mostly following the life of a middle aged nobody who gets thrown into the machine of social media fame momentarily, only to be crushed eventually by the weight of his own weird predicament. The biting satire features Nicholas Cage in a masterful central performance and also has Julianne Nicholson as the female lead. The fever dream-like Lynchian comedy is directed by Kristoffer Borgli.

Double Engine (Telugu)

When: January 5

This Telugu indie is billed as a western-like adventure of an Ambitious auto rickshaw driver named Danny who is lured into the black market of superstition, as he searches for a non poisonous two-headed snake, locally referred to as Double Engine. The film marks the debut feature theatrical release for the indie filmmaking duo, Rohit, who directed the film and Sasi, who wrote. Double Engine is scored by Vivek Sagar.

Raastha (Malayalam)

When: January 5

This survival drama tracks the hardships faced by a couple, who is forced to look for a missing person in the deserts of Oman. The search then catapults into a battle of survival for the two Malayalees who get stranded in the wild deserts with nothing much going on to keep them alive. Directed by Aneesh Anwar, this ensemble drama features Sarjano Khalid, Anagha Narayanan, T G Ravi, Irshad and Sudheesh among others.

Barbarika (Kannada)

When: January 5

A crime procedural that follows the hero investigating a series of seemingly connected murders, that is part of a series of killings based on “Supari Killing", a sort of paid assassination network orchestrated by someone in power. The film tracks his journey in uncovering the secrets behind the murders and the culprits. Starring Skanda Ashok, Sirri Raju and B M Venkatesh is directed by Shandilya.

Satyashodhak (Marathi)

When: January 5

Satyashodhak the story of a village in ancient Maratha province, where education and rights to learn were limited to the members of the higher caste and affluent like all places in India. However, the film tackles the attempts by a few spirited progressive’s who tried to take down the regressive practices of the day and deliver justice to all. The film features Sandeep Kulkarni and Rajshri Deshpande in prominent roles and is directed by Nilesh Jalamkar.

Ole Aale (Marathi)

When: January 5

What happens when an estranged father and son set out on a personal trip, where they are accompanied by an enigmatic traveller? This road film features Nana Patekar, Makarand Anaspure and Siddarth Chandekar and Sayali Sanjeev in the lead roles. The film traces the gradual melting of the ice in the trio’s inner dynamics and how the journey unlocks life’s oddities to them. The film is directed by Vipul Mehta.

Panchak (Marathi)

When: January 5

When a family loses its elder statesmen one fine day, the auspicious day of his death starts a chain reaction that causes several rifts in the family as they expect five more of their members to be dead next year, same time, due to wrongful constellations as per their stars. This hilarious satire directed by Rahul and Jayant Jathar stars Addinath M Kothare, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Bharti Achrekar, Tejasree Pradhan and Anand Ingale among others in an ensemble supporting cast.

Danny Jigar-Ek Matra (Gujarathi)

When: January 5

Danny Jigar-Ek Matra follows a stylish super cop who is tasked with finding a missing 600 year old holy statue. He uses his own charming ways and unconventional approach in investigating the missing statue and in the meantime encounters formidable opposition. The film directed by Krishnadev Yagnik features Yash Soni, Tarjanee Bhadla, Jithendra Thakkar and Chetan Daiya in the lead roles.
