After Gulabo Sitabo, Vidya Balan Starrer Shakuntala Devi To Release on Amazon Prime Video

A day after Shoojit Sircar announced the digital release of his film Gulabo Sitabo on Amazon Prime, the streaming giant has said that they will also premiere Vidya Balan-starrer Shakuntala Devi. A release date is yet to be fixed.

The film is based on the life of mathematician Shakuntala Devi, nicknamed the "human computer", for her innate ability to make incredibly complex calculations within seconds. The film also stars Sanya Malhotra, who will be seen playing the role of Shakuntala Devi's daughter. Written and directed by Anu Menon, the film has been produced by Sony Pictures Networks Productions and Vikram Malhotra.

These back-to-back announcements appear to be the beginning of many more films going straight to digital while the future of cinema theatres remains uncertain. After Gulabo Sitabo announced its digital release, multiplex chain INOX put out an angry statement condemning the decision. They called the move "alarming and  disconcerting" and harmful to the relationship between creators and cinema owners. But with more films understandably being forced to skip a theatrical release, the relationship between producers and theatre owners is likely to get frayed further.
