The seeds of Tumbbad lie in horror – a man (Sohum Shah) on a quest for gold coins that is protected by an ancient demon – but it is much more. It is a morality tale on greed, a folk tale about local legends and myths, an inter-generational family saga spanning the last decades of pre-Independent India. Set in interior Maharashtra, the film is atmospherically shot by Pankaj Kumar and boasts of inventive production design by Nitin Zihani Choudhary and Rakesh Yadav. Tumbbad was one of the 2018 films that took the horror genre in India one step forward.
The film had an unusually long period of production – and an unusually long credit list. Rahi Anil Barve, who came up with the original idea, shares directors credits with Adesh Prasad. The Creative Director is Anand Gandhi. It is edited by Sanyukta Kaza, and written by Mitesh Shah, Prasad, Barve and Gandhi. Shah, who plays the protagonist, produced the film. It is presented by Aanand L Rai. Tumbbad is available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
