Director Meghna Gulzar's 2015 docudrama was based on the gruesome 2008 double murder of 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar and domestic help Hemraj Banjade in Noida. The mysterious deaths have been widely reported in the media since, with various theories on how the crime unfolded being thrown up. Talvar presented the multiple scenarios that were considered during the long and convoluted investigation. Most importantly, it threw light on how the police botched the investigation and challenged the theory that Aarushi's parents Nupur and Rajesh Talwar had killed her.
The Talwars were convicted in 2015 and awarded a life sentence. Earlier this month, Nupur and Rajesh Talwar were acquitted based on insufficient evidence against them and were released from Dasna Jail in Uttar Pradesh.
Deftly written by Vishal Bhardwaj and Aditya Nimbalkar, the film was lauded for reimagining this complex case without sensationalising the events. It starred Konkona Sen Sharma and Neeraj Kabi as the parents – Nutan and Ramesh Tandon – and Irrfan as the investigation officer Ashwin Kumar.
