One of Tamil cinema's enduring romances, Gautham Vasudev Menon's Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya follows the life of Karthik (Simbu), an aspiring filmmaker, who falls in love with the older Jessie (an IT employee played by Trisha) who lives in the house right above his. A Malayali Christian from a strict family, Jessie is constantly confused between her feelings towards Karthik and her family, setting the stage for one of Tamil cinema's messiest/complex love stories. Backed by AR Rahman's incredible soundtrack, the film took us from Chennai to Kerala and New York, and through the various stages and moods of their relationship.
Written by Gautham, the film was not only among the most widely acclaimed films of the year, but also one of its biggest box office successes. As we near 10 years of the film, Menon shares an early draft of Jessie, back when it was being written with Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu in mind; also why the name Karthik becomes interchangeable with 'Mahesh' as we go along.
