Pathaam Valavu: The Turns Are Too Basic To Make This Joseph-clone Work

  • Posted on May 14, 2022
  • by Vishal Menon
The making is flat and the sentimental approach that clicked in Joseph doesn’t really work when there are no surprises or secrets we want to learn about its lead

Mammootty's Puzhu Is A Stellar Study Of The Inheritance Of Prejudice

  • Posted on May 13, 2022May 13, 2022
  • by Vishal Menon
Director Ratheena chooses to transplant a myth onto an urban upper-caste milieu, where everyone’s educated but there’s still a vacuum when it comes to the most basic human value

Underwhelming, without the cleverness of the earlier films

  • Posted on May 1, 2022May 1, 2022
  • by Vishal Menon
What makes the film harder to hold on to the flatness in the staging. With so many scenes set inside the CBI office with officers discussing the case, a true crime podcast would have sufficed to tell the same story

Even with all the effort one takes to be prepared for a particular kind of film you know is meant for a particular kind of audience, Makal is quite spectacularly difficult to sit through

  • Posted on April 22, 2022

Aviyal Is A Nice Coming-Of-Age Story Until It Arjun-Reddies Itself Up

  • Posted on April 7, 2022April 18, 2022
  • by Vishal Menon
It is this same authenticity and a lived-in feel that goes completely missing when the film shifts to Goa for Krishnan’s “sex, drugs and rock and roll” phase. The film loses its clarity and it plummets headfirst into a series of clichés that cannot escape the Arjun Reddy imagery.

Despite Roshan's Able Making, Salute Murders An Excellent Plot

  • Posted on March 18, 2022March 18, 2022
  • by Vishal Menon
One part of the film remains interesting because it’s about a faceless, nameless criminal who needs to be found. Yet on the other side, we get flat, pointless scenes about faceless, nameless family members, only to pursue the emotional depth of Arvind’s crisis.
