Sonakshi played Pakhi Roy Chaudhary, the daughter of a wealthy landlord in 1950s Bengal, who suffers from a frail constitution and has aspirations to be a writer. Pakhi falls in love Varun Shrivastav (Ranveer), an archaeologist. They are to be married but unbeknownst to Pakhi, Varun is not all that he seems and this secret has terrible consequences for their relationship.
The film garnered significant praise from critics for its lyrical and lush tone and direction. Both the lead actors were also singled out for their performances. There was appreciation, in particular, for Sonakshi, whose character was unlike anything she had essayed so far.
Despite good reviews, the film was shut out from several leading awards categories. In response, Sonakshi tweeted her disappointment: “Disheartening how Looterahas been held back from most of the nominations this year!”
The lack of recognition apart, Lootera remains an incandescent period love story with timeless appeal. The film’s screenplay was co-adapted by Motwane and Bhavani Iyer. The dialogues were credited to Anurag Kashyap.
