Movie Details of CID

Music: OP Nayyar

Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri, Jan Nisar Akhtar

Label: Saregama HMV

Director: Raj Khosla

After being associated with the composer in varying capacities in three movies, CID was the last time that Guru Dutt worked with OP Nayyar for a long time – until they reunited in Dutt's final movie, ten years later. Not for any shortcoming at OP Nayyar's end of course, the composer delivered one of his finest soundtracks here with lyricists Majrooh Sultanpuri and Jan Nisar Akhtar – six incredibly lively and catchy songs in the man's trademark style and featuring some of his favourite singers. Songs whose lasting quality has been proven time and again with tributes from different musicians – the latest one being Fifi in Bombay Velvet (2015).

Best Song of CID: Though occasionally evocative of Mohabbat Kar Lo from OP Nayyar and Guru Dutt's previous hit Aar Paar, it is hard not to fall in love with the effervescent Rafi-Geeta Dutt duet Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein. The only song written by Jan Nisar Akhtar, its arrangement had elements instantly identifiable as OP Nayyar's – sarangi usage in an unexpectedly happy setting, tonga-esque rhythm et al.

On a related note: Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan, the song where not-so-good things about Bombay are conveyed in a very feel-good package, drew inspiration from the American folk song Oh My Darling Clementine.
