Sardar Udham (2021)

Directed by Shoojit Sircar, this biopic stars Vicky Kaushal as freedom fighter Sher “Udham” Singh. Inspired by the revolutionary politics of Bhagat Singh, Singh played a significant role in the Indian Independence Movement, most notably known for his assassination of the British officer responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in 1919.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)

Ajay Devgn essays Bhagat Singh in this historical film directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. The film takes us through the life and contributions of the legendary freedom fighter, right to the day he was hanged to death. It won two National Film Awards for Best Feature Film in Hindi and Best Actor for Devgn. 

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019)

The film starring Kangana Ranaut in the lead role tells the story of Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, who played a key role in the Revolt of 1857. Ranaut’s performance was universally praised, and Manikarnika went on to become one of the highest-grossing female-driven films in India.

Aamir Khan returned to the big screen after a four-year hiatus with this biographical drama on the life of Mangal Pandey. The freedom fighter was the catalyst for the Indian Revolt of 1857, and the Independence Movement that followed. Mangal Pandey was one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero (2005)

This biographical film was directed by Shyam Benegal. It portrays the life of prominent nationalist Subhas Chandra Bose and the eventual formation of the Azad Hind Fauj. The film has an ensemble cast with Sachin Khedekar playing Bose. It received widespread critical acclaim and won a number of awards upon release.
