Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006)

Released on 11 August, this musical romantic drama directed by Karan Johar stars Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta. The film sensitively explores infidelity, and was a major commercial success.

Chak De! India (2007)

Shah Rukh Khan plays the coach of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team in this critically acclaimed sports film that beautifully explores female friendships. It was released on 10 August, in the week of India’s 60th Independence Day.

Ek Tha Tiger (2012)

This Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer was released right on Independence Day. The film follows a RAW agent who goes undercover for a mission but falls in love with a Pakistani woman. Ek Tha Tiger is the first instalment in the YRF Spy Universe.

Singham Returns (2014)

This action flick is the second instalment in Rohit Shetty’s popular Cop Universe. The film, which stars Ajay Devgn as the eponymous ‘Singham’, was released on Independence Day, and broke a number of box-office records upon its release.

Rustom (2016)

Released on 12 August, this Akshay Kumar starrer is the story of a naval officer who is accused of murdering the man with whom his wife is having an affair. The film, which is based on a real-life court case, received positive reviews.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017)

This comedy with a social message emphasises the importance of constructing toilets across households in order to improve sanitation, particularly in rural areas. Starring Akshay Kumar in the lead role, the film was released on 11 August.

Mission Mangal (2019)

This film highlights the contribution of women to India’s first expedition to Mars. It has an ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha and Tapsee Pannu, among others. Mission Mangal was released on 15 August.

Shershaah (2021)

This biopic starring Siddharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani tells the true story of war hero Vikram Batra, who was martyred in the Kargil War. Released on 12 August, Shershaah  became the most-watched film on Amazon Prime Video in India.

Laal Singh Chaddha (2022)

This Hindi adaptation of the 1994 film Forrest Gump features Aamir Khan in the titular role, alongside Kareena Kapoor and Mona Singh. The film follows an autistic man’s journey of life and love, and was released on 11 August.
