Trailer Talk: Phillauri

Trailer Talk: Phillauri

It is rare for an actress at the top of her game to turn producer in Bollywood but Anushka Sharma decided to be the change she wanted to see. "I would watch films like Frances Ha and The Squid and the Whale, and wonder why we weren't making these beautiful, slice-of-life movies. Then I thought: why am I not doing it?" Sharma said last month.

She is a woman of her word. NH10, the first movie by Sharma's Clean Slate Films, was a dark and violent thriller. Phillauri, her new venture, seems to be an absurdist romantic comedy.

There's a big reveal in the first few seconds of the trailer – Sharma's character is a ghost who is haunting a would-be groom (Life of Pi's Suraj Sharma). This appears to be the running gag of the film: Sharma's odd presence unsettling the young man as he prepares for his wedding.

The real catch though is the flashback to the ghost's own romance. Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh plays her rustic lover and as we can guess, the unravelling of their emotional story will form the heart of Phillauri. How Anshai Lal, the film's debutant director, manages the changes in tone between the two different settings and time periods should be intriguing to watch.

Phillauri's trailer promises a refreshing take on the standard Bollywood romcom. If it delivers, Anushka Sharma may just be the hottest new producer in town.
