Film Companion is a platform for entertainment journalism. Our main focus is film – Bollywood, Hollywood, world cinema, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Marathi. We do reviews, interviews, features and recommendations around cinema. We also cover television, short films, web series, OTT-platform content, stand-up comedy, cinema-related books and occasionally, non-film music.
Film Companion is for lovers of good content. We are screen agnostic - people might consume the content in a darkened hall or on their smartphones. Film Companion provides conversation and curation around the content – so if you need a review of the latest Netflix show or the latest Tamil film or an interview with Varun Dhawan, you come to Film Companion. FC celebrates good content and the men and women who create it.
Our tonality is Empire magazine meets Indiewire. We are not fanboys but we are not snooty cinephiles either. We love mainstream. We also love arty and everything in between. Film Companion is a mix of the high and the low, the snacky and the slow burn content. So you will get Jacqueline Fernandez giving tips on how to navigate social media. You will also get an in-depth conversation with Vetrimaaran on how to navigate the foreign language Oscar. There is heft here but also insight and entertainment.
Gossip, paid reviews or celeb lifestyle journalism. So we will carry a feature on how essential and powerful stylists have become but we won’t carry photos of what Sonam wore to an award function.
The term Film Companion comes from a line by the American philosopher Stanley Cavell who said: The writing about film that has meant most to me has the power of a missing companion. We aim to be the missing companion for smart people who like good content.
