The Suicide Squad Trailer Talk: Bring On The Bad Guys

The trailer for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, the (sort of) sequel (reboot?) to 2016's universally loathed Suicide Squad, is here.

The basic principle of the story, from the DC superhero universe, remains the same. The government recruits supervillains to do missions, because they're expendable, and force them to do your bidding by putting an explosive charge in their head which you can detonate at any time.

Despite having almost the same title (for reasons unknown) Gunn's feels wildly different from the 2016 David Ayer-directed film. For one, everything about the trailer screams James Gunn's unique brand of humour and love of bringing wonderfully weird and obscure characters to life, something he's become known for after the success of the MCU's Guardians Of The Galaxy movies.

While much of the core cast remains the same as the 2016 film, like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag and Jai Courteney's Captain Boomerang, there are many new faces. There's the new team lead in Idris Elba as Blood Sport, John Cena's wonderfully campy looking The Peacemaker (who's all set to get his own spin-off series next year), Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson and, my personal favourite, the Sylvester Stallone-voiced King Shark. That's a half-man/half-shark who we see swallow a man whole and rip another one in half in the 3-minute long trailer.

Gunn's DC debut releases on August 6th in theatres and on HBO Max in the US. As to whether it's getting a streaming releases in India as The Snyder Cut did, remains to be seen. You can watch the trailer below:
