Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu Trailer Talk: Silambarasan TR’s Ascent In A World Of Crime

The trailer of Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu begins with an ominous voiceover, in Menon’s signature style: Sometimes, speaking the truth is much more difficult than narrating a story, the audience is warned, as the screen is cut to a young Silambarasan TR peeking out a moving train.

The film documents the rise of Muthu, a naive simpleton (played by Silambarasan TR), in a notorious world of crime. The trailer is led by Menon’s voiceover, documenting Muthu’s ascent in the Mumbai underworld. The 2-minute video also keeps switching between the different phases of Muthu’s life, introducing us to the various characters in Muthu’s universe: Radikaa Sarathkumar, Muthu’s mother, Siddhi Idnani, Muthu’s romantic interest, and Neeraj Madhav, who plays a character (with possibly queer notes) struggling to fit into the gritty world of crime.

The AR Rahman musical is written by Jeyamohan, and lensed by Siddhartha Nuni. Looks like the film, which is subtitled as ‘Part 1: The Kindling’, is part of a duology. The film also marks Menon’s third collaboration with Silambarasan following films such as Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010) and Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (2016). The film will be released in the theatres on September 15.
